New Film About Brian Wilson Coming Soon

A new documentary is coming out about musician Brian Wilson, the main songwriter for the Beach Boys. Actor Paul Dano plays Wilson as a young Beach Boy and John Cusack plays him in middle-age as he tries to get his life back on track. Wilson himself is now 72 years old and worked with the producers of the film.

Wilson is the composer of classic songs like “Good Vibrations”, “Help Me Rhonda” and many more. Wilson made the controversial decision in the 1960’s to stop touring with the Beach Boys during the height of their fame. It’s a decision that created a lot of unwanted interest in him.

The word “genius” is often used to describe Wilson. Maybe he is a genius. I don’t know. In any event, I think that having the label attached to him put him under a lot of pressure. It’s got to be hard to write new music when everyone expects it to be as brilliant as your earlier work.

There is an emphasis in the film on the years where Wilson was trying to get away from the influence of his psychologist Dr. Landy, who basically controlled his life. Personally, I don’t think that it’s fair for the filmmakers to dwell on this non-productive period in Wilson’s life. Daniel Amen said many great musicians go through periods of depression and inactivity, especially after they have become wealthy and can afford to.
